10 Reasons Why Social Media is Good for Business

Social Media – you either love it, or you don’t. Or you just simply don’t get what the hype is all about? And that’s okay when it comes to social media for personal or recreational use. However, what I’m going to cover in this blog is why it is essential for every business to not just set-up social media accounts and then forget about them, but how social media can be beneficial for business in more ways than you can imagine.

With millions of daily active users on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn (to name a few), social media allows businesses to gain greater exposure in the digital world, thus enabling businesses to attract and increase their customer base. And this is just the start. I could bore you with statistics to show you the influence social media has in the world of business, but instead I prefer to cut to the chase and tell you why I think your business (and every business, in fact) should be actively using social media.

So, here are the ten reasons why I believe social media is good for business.

1- Content Sharing Made Easy

Unlike in the past, when marketers were presented with the challenge of ensuring their content reached their customers in the quickest possible time, social media has now made content sharing fast and easy. This makes it really simple for businesses that use social media, whether it is for sharing content about their business or for content curation. All it takes is a simple click to share content on your brand’s social network accounts. However, it is important to remember that in order to get your customers to share your content with their followers, you have ensure that you not only carefully align your content with your brand, but also share relevant content that keeps your audience interested.

2- Rank Higher (link building)

Online exposure through social media helps boost traffic to your website and your search engine ranking. Just building a website is not enough. Using social media for your business not only helps you direct people to your website, but the more social media engagement and shares you receive, the higher your search results and ranking will be.

The constant high volume of traffic brought to websites by the various social media channels out there has brought about the notion of incorporating websites with social media channels as a way to convert potential leads into prospects. The more social channels you actively engage and share in will result in more traffic you can reach online. However, not every business has to be on every social media channel. It is good practice to carefully select the social media channels that will work well for your business. Another factor when used in conjunction with social media sharing is, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). When combined with social media, SEO efforts can turn out to be ideal in helping to maximise your marketing efforts.

3- Brand Awareness

Social media for business allows you to increase your brand awareness and reach by showcasing your brand with little to no budget. These same strategies, when used with traditional advertising models cost a lot more. Having a strong social media presence is an efficient way to build your brand’s reputation and showcase your business. Social media delivers instant information in the digital sphere, thus giving businesses the opportunity to advertise and market their products and services far and wide. Regularly updating your social media channels on all that’s happening with the brand, leads to your followers and target audience starting to view your company as an influencer. It is vital that you define your business objective – whether it’s to create brand awareness, build relationships or drive new sales – as it will help you work in parallel on all of them.

4- Customer Feedback

Social media allows you to hear people’s opinions and gain instant access to positive or negative customer feedback, which provides your business with valuable insights on your customer’s perspective. Social media thus can be a great source of customer service, enabling your business to transform negative customer experiences into positive outcomes. It is important to remember that customer satisfaction is the key to customer retention and customer loyalty. Social media is great especially if you launch a new product in the market and share it on social media platforms, as you’ll instantly learn what your customers think of it. Your business can also gain insights into customer opinions via social media by learning how they use your products or services, thus helping your business cater to your customers’ needs.

5- Expand Sales

Gaining instant access to consumers’ feedback without doubt will help boost your sales results.  Social media helps you learn about your customers’ needs and potential leads are more likely to become customers if you respond to their specific requirements promptly and, with a personal touch. We all like to be made to feel special, don’t we? Social media will also, most definitely help you research your competitors, see what they’re doing and find ways to ensure your business is on par with the vast competition out there.

6- Attract More Customers

Social media channels like Twitter and Facebook have tools that enable you and your business to share your content with a target audience of your choosing. Geo-targeting is an effective way to get your message across to a specific audience or demographic based on their location. Geo-targeting can also help your business find new customers, as well as expand your audience and reach. It is also a great way to contact your prospective customers and/or leads, again with an added personal touch.

7- Audience Insights

Social media makes it possible and easy to learn about your audience. As we all know, the key to success for businesses in any industry is, knowing your audience. With the various Insights tools available, getting to know your audience’s gender, age, as well as the dominant languages spoken is pretty straightforward. Gaining knowledge in these areas can help your business target campaigns, services and product offers to a specific audience, which in turn will provide you a better return on investment.

8- Lead Generation

Social networking sites are an easy way to generate leads. There are two types of content your business can promote via Twitter Ads: ‘Ungated Content’ – this is free content, which requires no email address for access and ‘Gated Content’ – this is free content, which requires an email address for access. Using social media to share gated content is a great way for any business to generate leads.

9- Build Relationships

The kind of social media dialogue between customers and a brand is something traditional advertising will find next to impossible to achieve. Social media offers the kind of relationship-building opportunity that is virtually unlimited. From a marketing perspective, social media presents the best opportunities for brands to create a great community of loyal and active customers.

10- Minimal Cost

Social media marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways for your business to increase brand awareness without compromising on quality. In the past few years we have seen social media marketing take over traditional print marketing and advertising as it can slash your marketing costs considerably. Social media thus increases your advertising opportunities, while you channel your PR efforts without a major commitment on time and money.

Now, if the above ten reasons haven’t convinced you to get your business on social media, then all I have left to say is “you have no choice – be in or be left behind!” That’s the way it is in today’s digital world, isn’t it. If you want to succeed and stay ahead in the game, you have to use social media to the maximum to reap the benefits. Your competitors are social, so why aren’t you?

All it takes is a spoonful of passion, a pinch of creativity and a dash of consistency to ensure your social media campaigns are strategically rolled out to reach your target audience.
