We all know that being an early riser is the best way to be productive and achieve our daily goals. But getting out of bed is arguably one of the hardest tasks of the day… just give us five more minutes!!
But no matter how many more minutes of snooze time you have, chances are when you do get up, you don’t feel that great.
The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are my top 7 tips on how to wake up feeling fresh.
1- Ditch the coffee – shock horror
I know I know, this isn’t what you wanted to hear… but ditching coffee really can improve the way you feel not only in the morning, but also throughout the whole day. Whilst it may seem like a complete contradiction, surely coffee is there to give you more energy? If you’re drinking it every morning or throughout the day, it could be making you feel all the more sluggish when you wake up.
Caffeine is a lot like a strong drug, your body can become tolerant to its effects, meaning the more you drink, the less effect it will be having. So, if reaching for your coffee cup is a major part of your morning routine, then as soon as you wake up you’ll be feeling a lot less than fresh, because what you’re actually experiencing is caffeine withdrawal.
So, although it may be hard, why not try cutting out that morning cup of coffee, and instead opt for a refreshing glass of cold water with lemon, which will also boost your metabolism for the day, or a herbal tea, it’s so much better for you, and after a few days you won’t be depending on caffeine to feel awake!
2- Have a technology detox
With more and more of us glued to our phone screens and laptops, it’s no wonder many of us aren’t getting enough sleep at night. Giving yourself the time to wind down and relax, without the blue light of your phone screen, and the monotonous motion of flicking through Instagram, will help you get to sleep quicker.
The bright blue light from screens may be preventing your body from producing melatonin, a hormone that’s essential for restful sleep, naturally produced as the day becomes darker. The blue and green wavelengths of light produced from your phone, laptop, or tablet trick your brain into thinking it’s still daylight, preventing the release of melatonin, not only making it more difficult to get to sleep, but also making your quality of sleep worse.
Reading a book in bed is a great way to relax and wind down for the night. Reading tires your brain, meaning you’ll get to sleep quicker, giving you a longer, more restful sleep, making it easier to get up in the morning.
3- Don’t go to bed on a full stomach – but don’t go to bed hungry
A lot of people run home after work, cook up a late dinner, eat it and go to bed. This may be contributing to why you’re feeling rubbish in the morning. The process of digestion isn’t instant, so you don’t want to be lying down too soon after eating a big meal. Try and leave a couple of hours between your dinner and bedtime, and see if you feel better the next day.
It’s also advised that you don’t go to bed hungry! If you feel hungry when you go to bed, chances are you’ll find it difficult to get to sleep. Eat something small before you go to bed like a small bowl of cereal, you’ll feel much better.
4- Eat a nutritious breakfast
Do you skip breakfast? Chances are you probably do, as this is a habit that so many people have. It’s completely understandable; you don’t want to be messing around making food early in the morning when you could be spending that extra ten minutes in bed. But an empty stomach isn’t going to provide you with enough energy to see you through till lunchtime, not to mention it’s pretty unhealthy not to eat breakfast. Eating something nutritious like porridge with fruit, or a banana and granola will give you so much more energy to function throughout the day, and make you feel ten times more awake than without.
5- Have something to wake up for
Of course, we all have those days when it’s a real struggle to get out of bed, that’s natural. But if you feel like that every single day, you may want to question whether what you’re waking up for excites you. If you get up to do a job that you hate, with a boss who drives you crazy, you’re not going to enjoy getting up in the morning. If you have something that you enjoy doing, you’re more likely to wake up raring to go, knowing you’re going to be doing something great. But we’re not suggesting you leave your job! An alternative could be to find something you’re excited for that you could do in the morning. It could be to start the day with a cycle, or run, or it could be something simple like making your favourite breakfast. Start your day with something happy and fun, as opposed to starting it with work.
6- Keep sleep consistent
Keep your sleep consistent! If you go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, your body will get used to the times and will be ready to wake up. If your sleeping pattern is all over the place, you’re more likely to feel groggy in the morning. Start by setting a sensible bedtime every night, and set your alarm for the same time each morning, even on weekends. You’ll soon get used to the times and you may feel a lot better for it.
7- Splash your face with cold water
This is probably the simplest thing you could do in order to wake up feeling fresh. The feeling of cold water on your face and skin activates certain hormones that get the heart pumping faster, really perking you up first thing. Washing your face with cold water can also tighten the skin and decrease the appearance of under-eye bags, so it really will make you feel a lot fresher and ready for the day.
Even if you perform just one of the above tips, it could make a real difference to how you feel when you wake up.
